Neal's Yard Remedies Prenatal Massage Q&A
Is prenatal massage safe for all stages of pregnancy?
Prenatal massage is generally safe from the second trimester onward. We do not recommend massages during the first trimester due to the higher risk of miscarriage. Always consult your healthcare provider before starting any new treatments.
What should I expect during a prenatal massage session?
The session is tailored to the needs of pregnant women, focusing on areas such as the lower back, hips, and shoulders. You’ll lie in a comfortable side-lying position with support cushions to ensure safety and comfort.
The massage will be gentle, focusing on relaxation and relieving tension.
How long is each session, and how many sessions do I need?
Each session lasts 1 hour and 45 minutes. The number of sessions depends on your needs and how your body responds. Many women benefit from regular massages throughout their pregnancy.
What are the benefits of prenatal massage for both mother and baby?
Prenatal massage can help reduce muscle tension, improve circulation, relieve back pain, reduce swelling in legs and feet, and promote better sleep. For the baby, it helps the mother relax and feel more connected to the baby, contributing to a calmer pregnancy.
Do I need a doctor's approval before getting a prenatal massage
Only if you have any high-risk conditions or complications in your pregnancy.
Can prenatal massage help with labor preparation?
Yes, regular prenatal massages can help your body prepare for labor by promoting relaxation, improving circulation, and relieving muscle tension. It can also support emotional well-being, helping you feel more balanced and ready for delivery.
How is prenatal massage different from a regular massage?
Prenatal massage uses gentle techniques, with special care to avoid deep pressure or certain areas. The positioning is also different; pregnant women lie on their sides with pillows to ensure comfort and safety.
What techniques are used in prenatal massage?
Neal's Yard Remedies prenatal massage includes gentle techniques, light pressure, and long strokes to improve circulation. Special attention is given to the lower back, shoulders, and legs, which often bear the brunt of pregnancy-related discomfort.
What clothing do I wear for massage? Do I have to be undressed?
Pregnancy massage is performed with as much or as little clothing as you’re comfortable wearing – it’s always a personal decision. Usually we recommend that you keep underwear on, and we use towels for coverage so only the parts that are being massaged are exposed.
Can I get a prenatal massage in the first trimester?
It is not recommended to receive a prenatal massage during the first trimester due to the body’s heightened sensitivity and the risk of miscarriage. We suggest starting from the second trimester onwards.
Is massage painful?
On tight and irritated areas, massage therapy can be uncomfortable and cause soreness the following day; this is sometimes necessary to release tension. The pressure of the massage can however be as light or as deep as is needed. It is important that you always feel comfortable and enjoy the treatment. If something doesn’t feel right, inform your therapist immediately.
Which massage oils do you use?
At Neal's Yard Remedies, we exclusively use certified organic Mother's massage oils that are specially formulated to be safe for both mother and baby during pregnancy. Our oils are free from harmful chemicals, ensuring a gentle and nurturing experience every time.
How soon can I come back after the baby is born?
If it was a healthy pregnancy and delivery without any major complication, a massage can safely be given as soon as you feel ready. However, if you have a caesarean-section you will usually need to wait at least 6 weeks for the scar tissue to heal.
Will prenatal massage help with sciatica or lower back pain?
